Remitly vs. Wells Fargo: Compare Exchange Rates, Fees, and How Much Actually Arrives (2026)

Wells Fargo's "no fee" wire isn't the whole story. Its exchange rate is lower than Remitly's. See how much more reaches your recipient.

Send Money

If you’re comparing Remitly (the online remittance company) vs. Wells Fargo (the bank) for sending a large amount of money abroad, one question matters most: how much of your money actually reaches your recipient once fees and exchange rates are accounted for?

That’s harder to answer than it looks. The fee is the number most providers show you up front, but the exchange rate determines how much your recipient actually receives, and it’s the number that’s easiest to overlook.

We recently tested the cost of some transactions sent via Wells Fargo and Remitly (see below for more details on methodology). This article examines the costs of those transactions based on how much money makes its way to the recipient.

Wells Fargo waives the outgoing wire fee when you send an international wire online in the destination currency. Both Remitly and Wells Fargo charged $0 on most of the transfers we tested, so the fee isn’t what separates them. The exchange rate is. In every transfer reviewed for this comparison, Remitly’s exchange rate was higher (i.e., better) than Wells Fargo’s, and more money reached the recipient as a result. See the tables below for the exact amounts, currencies, rates, and observation dates behind this comparison.

Below we break down the numbers for three of the countries people in the United States often send to: India, Mexico, and the Philippines, compared at the send amounts of $5,000, $10,000, and $50,000.

Quick Answer: Remitly vs. Wells Fargo

This comparison is based on transfers funded by the sender’s bank account to a recipient’s bank account at $5,000, $10,000, and $50,000. Rates observed on matching dates for each corridor: India and Philippines August 3, Mexico August 6, 2026.

  • The fee isn’t the difference. The exchange rate is. Wells Fargo waives its wire fee when you send online in the destination currency, and Remitly charged $0 in two of the three countries tested.
  • Remitly’s exchange rate was higher (better) than Wells Fargo’s in all scenarios tested, so more money reached the recipient every time. See the tables below for the amounts, currencies, rates, and dates.
  • Remitly transfers delivered about 2.9% to 3.0% more money to the recipient in every country we tested. For example, on a $10,000 transfer to Mexico, that was about $298 more to the recipient.
  • The gap grows with the size of the transfer, because the difference between the two different exchange rates apply to the whole amount you send.
  • Remitly is built to move large amounts. Verified send limits for Remitly transactions reach $300,000 online, and Remitly handles the identity and compliance checks a large transfer requires so it clears without getting stuck.
  • Transfers over $5,000 get dedicated support through Remitly’s Concierge service, with priority care and no handoffs.
  • Wells Fargo may cap how much you can send online, and may require a branch visit. It doesn’t publish the limit.

Comparison is based on the specific tested transfer amounts, destinations, payment/delivery methods, and provider pricing described in the Methodology Section. Exchange rates, fees, transfer limits, availability, and delivery times may vary and are subject to change when you send either through Remitly or Wells Fargo. Results are illustrative and may not reflect the pricing or amount received for a particular transaction. See Methodology below for details.

How Wells Fargo Prices International Transfers

Wells Fargo offers international wires through its online banking and branches. If you send the wire online in the destination currency, Wells Fargo waives its outgoing wire fee. A wire sent in US dollars costs $30, and branch wires cost $40 regardless of currency.

Because the transfer fee is waived, the exchange rate determines how much currency arrives. Here are the exchange rates each provider offered and the dates those rates were observed:

Currency Wells Fargo rate Remitly rate Observed
USD to INR 92.3276 95.14 Aug 3, 2026
USD to MXN 16.6708 17.18 Aug 6, 2026
USD to PHP 59.0249 60.72 Aug 3, 2026

A lower rate means fewer rupees or pesos on the other end. It comes out of what your recipient receives.

Wells Fargo also requires you to hold a Wells Fargo account to send, and may limit how much can be sent in a single online transaction.

How Remitly Prices International Transfers

Remitly shows the exchange rate and any fee up front, before you send, so you can see what your recipient will receive before you confirm.

You can fund a large transfer through Remitly with a bank wire. That matters more than it sounds. You pay your bank’s domestic wire fee to move dollars to Remitly, which typically costs less than international wire fees, and Remitly converts at its exchange rate. The result is an international transfer for roughly the price of a domestic wire from your bank.

Check with your bank to determine what fees they will charge for domestic wire transfers.

Large transfers require paperwork. Remitly handles it up front. Remitly asks for what’s needed before the transfer moves, usually a photo ID, passport, or proof of address, so the money doesn’t stall partway through. Remitly supports verified sending up to $300,000. You don’t need to split a large transfer into smaller ones to get it through.

Your money is protected the whole way. Remitly is a registered money transmitter with the U.S. Treasury’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network and is licensed and regulated in all U.S. states where it operates.

Funds can arrive by bank deposit to major institutions in 100+ currencies and markets. Mobile wallet, debit card deposit, and cash pickup are available in most countries if your recipient prefers them.

Beyond Price: Wells Fargo Send Limits and Branch Visits

One other thing can cost you time or money, and it doesn’t appear in a rate quote.

Online send limits: Wells Fargo caps how much you can wire online, but it doesn’t publish the limit. The amount varies based on your account and banking history, your recipient, and your transaction history with that recipient, and you only see it once you begin setting up the transfer. If your transfer is above that limit, you may need to visit a branch in person to complete a transfer you expected to finish online in a few minutes.

Remitly supports sending up to $300,000 with simple identity verification such as a photo ID, passport, and/or proof of address.

Remitly vs. Wells Fargo: Which Should You Use for a Large International Transfer?

In every scenario tested, across three countries and three amounts, Remitly’s exchange rate was higher (better) than Wells Fargo’s, and more money would reach the recipient as a result. Because the difference between the two rates applies to the whole amount you send, it grows as the transfer gets larger.

Remitly may be the better fit if you want:

  • More money reaching your recipient for the same amount sent
  • No Wells Fargo banking relationship required
  • Bank deposit, debit card deposit, mobile wallet, cash pickup, and home delivery as ways to receive
  • To send without a physical branch visit

Wells Fargo may appeal to senders who already bank there and prefer sending from an account they’re familiar with.

Remitly vs. Wells Fargo: Which Is Faster?

Wells Fargo publishes when it will send an international wire, not when it will arrive. A wire submitted before 2:20 pm Pacific Time is sent the same business day, but delivery time after that varies by destination country and isn’t published.

Remitly gives you an estimated delivery date before you confirm, with most large transfers arriving within a day of funding, many within an hour.

Remitly Q3-26 data. Disbursement speed reflects the time between when Remitly has the customer funds and when the funds are successfully disbursed (e.g., completed or available for pickup).

If you’re sending against a deadline, a closing date, a tuition payment, or a contract, what you need isn’t always the fastest possible transfer. It’s a date you can plan around.

How to Compare Live Pricing Yourself

Rates change daily, so it’s worth running the comparison yourself before you send. You’ll need a quote from each provider.

  1. Get a Remitly quote: enter your amount and destination on remitly.com
  2. Get a Wells Fargo quote: if you’re a Wells Fargo customer, set up a wire in online banking in the destination currency and review the rate before submitting
  3. Compare the two exchange rates directly. A higher rate means more money for your recipient.
  4. Compare the final amount your recipient receives, not the fee

Methodology

  • We compared Remitly and Wells Fargo using identical send amounts of $5,000, $10,000, and $50,000, sent from the US to a recipient bank account in each destination country. The comparison is based on the amount delivered to the recipient, calculated as (amount sent − fee) × each provider’s exchange rate, so both providers are measured on the same basis: what actually arrives.
  • Remitly figures reflect live retail quotes for a bank-funded transfer to a bank deposit, standard pricing with no promotional or first-transfer offers, captured on the same dates as the Wells Fargo observations for each corridor (India and Philippines August 3, Mexico August 6, 2026). Exchange rates used: 95.14 for USD to INR, 17.18 for USD to MXN, and 60.72 for USD to PHP. Remitly’s rate was captured at $5,000 and applied across all amounts, matching the treatment of Wells Fargo’s rate, which does not vary by transfer size.
  • Wells Fargo figures reflect its international digital wire sent in the destination currency, for which Wells Fargo waives the outgoing wire fee. Wells Fargo exchange rates are the rates observed for each corridor on the dates listed, sourced from FXC competitive rate monitoring: 92.3276 for USD to INR (August 3, 2026), 16.6708 for USD to MXN (August 6, 2026), and 59.0249 for USD to PHP (August 3, 2026). These are observed rates for the corridors listed, not a blended average over a period.
  • Wells Fargo’s exchange rate does not vary by transfer size, so the same observed rate is applied at $5,000, $10,000, and $50,000. Wells Fargo sets its exchange rate at its own discretion and states that the rate may vary based on factors including currency pair, transaction size, and payment channel, so the rate you’re offered may differ.
  • Wells Fargo does not publish its digital wire limits. The amount you can send varies by account, banking history, and recipient, and is shown only once you begin a transfer. Transfers above your limit require a branch visit. Wells Fargo charges $40 for branch wires, including wires sent in a foreign currency. A transfer at the amounts quoted here may not be possible in a single online transaction.
  • Other banks may also charge fees before funds reach the recipient; these are not included above and would further reduce the amount delivered by wire.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Does Wells Fargo charge a fee for international wires?

Wells Fargo charges no fee for a digital wire sent in a foreign currency. A digital wire sent in US dollars costs $30, and any branch wire costs $40, including foreign currency. On the transfers we tested, the fee wasn’t what separated the two providers. The exchange rate was.

Is Remitly cheaper than Wells Fargo for large transfers?

In all nine scenarios tested across India, Mexico, and the Philippines at $5,000 to $50,000, Remitly’s exchange rate was higher than Wells Fargo’s and more money would have reached the recipient. At $10,000, the difference was about $275 to $298 across the three countries, roughly 2.9% to 3.0%.

Can I send $50,000 online with Wells Fargo?

Maybe. Wells Fargo limits how much you can wire online but doesn’t publish the amount. It varies based on your account, your banking history, your recipient, and your transaction history with that recipient, and Wells Fargo can adjust it at any time. There’s both a daily limit and a rolling 30-day limit. You see your limit only once you begin setting up the transfer. If your amount is above it, you’ll need to visit a branch, where the wire fee is $40 even for foreign currency.

Do I need a Wells Fargo account to send an international wire?

Yes. Digital Wires are funded from a Wells Fargo account, so you need to be a customer and enrolled in online banking. You also need a current US residence; customers living in US territories or abroad can’t send digital wires. Remitly doesn’t require an account at any particular bank.

Could other banks deduct fees before my recipient gets the money?

Possibly. Wells Fargo states that third parties or other banks may charge fees in addition to its own. Those come out before the money reaches your recipient, so the amount that arrives can be less than the amount quoted. These fees aren’t included in the comparison tables above, which means the Wells Fargo figures shown are conservative.

What other countries can I compare?

This comparison covers India, Mexico, and the Philippines, three of the countries people in the United States often send to. You can check live pricing for any destination at remitly.com.
