The UK visa system governs the entry, residence, and employment of foreign nationals. The Skilled Worker Visa enables professionals to fill key roles and requires sponsorship from a UK employer. The Global Business Mobility Visa supports the transfer of business professionals to UK branches. The Temporary Worker Visa is designed for short-term roles, such as charity workers or those in creative industries. The Graduate Visa allows international graduates to gain work experience in the UK, boosting career opportunities and contributing valuable skills.

Understanding Your Right to Work in the UK

Employment in the UK is governed by immigration and visa regulations. British citizens do not need a work visa. Since Brexit, EU citizens who were living in the UK before December 2020 must have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme to work (right to work). Those arriving after this date require a work visa. Non-EU nationals must apply for a Skilled Worker Visa or Temporary Worker Visa, meeting eligibility requirements and adhering to immigration laws.

Types of UK Work Visas

Skilled Worker Visa and Tier 2 Visa

The Skilled Worker Visa, which replaced the Tier 2 Visa, forms part of the UK’s points-based immigration system. Applicants must earn at least 70 points based on factors such as having a job offer, meeting salary thresholds, English language proficiency, and fulfilling occupation requirements. Sponsorship by a licensed UK employer is mandatory, ensuring compliance with employment regulations and addressing labour market demands.

Graduate Visa: Opportunities for International Students

The Graduate Visa allows international students from recognised UK universities to work in the UK for up to two years after completing their degree, or three years for PhD graduates. Eligible applicants must hold a UK bachelor’s or postgraduate qualification. This visa has no restrictions on employment type, enabling graduates to work full-time, part-time, or as self-employed individuals without the need for sponsorship. It supports career growth and reflects the UK’s commitment to retaining global talent, strengthening the workforce with skilled professionals.
